Origin and Classification

  • Origin: Tropical Africa (from Senegal to Angola, down to South Africa).
  • Habitat: Rainforests, savannas, often epiphytic on trees or lithophytic on rocks.

Appearance

  • Size: Large orchid, capable of reaching 60 cm in height.
  • Pseudobulbs: Elongated, spindle-shaped, clustered, greenish-yellow to brown in color.
  • Leaves: Long, leathery, V-shaped, deciduous during dry periods.

Flowers

  • Shape: Upright inflorescences, bearing up to 100 small flowers.
  • Color: Greenish-yellow to brown, often spotted with maroon (hence the name "Leopard Orchid").
  • Fragrance: Lightly fragrant, reminiscent of vanilla or honey.

Cultivation

  • Climate: Warm and humid, with a distinct dry season.
  • Light: Bright, but without direct sunlight during hot hours.
