Cattleya cernua (formerly Sophronitis cernua)

(Brazilian miniature species, renowned for its bright red flowers and generous blooming)
Origin and classification
Type : Natural epiphytic species, native to Brazil.
Regions of origin :
Brazilian states : Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina.
Natural habitat :
Humid and mountainous forests (600–1,500 m altitude).
Grows on low tree branches or mossy rocks, in bright, filtered light.

Family : Orchidaceae (subfamily Epidendroideae, tribe Laeliinae).
Synonyms : Sophronitis cernua, Hadrolaelia cernua.
Appearance
Size : Miniature to small orchid (10–20 cm in height).
Pseudobulbs :
Small and ovoid (2–3 cm long), reddish or green, grouped on a short rhizome.

Leaves :
Lanceolate, leathery, dark green (5–10 cm long).
1 leaf per pseudobulb (typical of the former Sophronitis).

Roots : Fine, whitish to silvery, adapted to capture ambient humidity.
Flowers
Shape :
Solitary flowers or in pairs, small but highly colored (3–5 cm in diameter).
Wide and rounded petals and sepals, tubular and slightly curved lip.

Color :
Bright red to scarlet, sometimes orange (flammea variety).
Lip often darker (purple or magenta).

Fragrance : Light, slightly sweet.
Bloom duration : 2–3 weeks per flower.
Blooming period :
Spring and autumn (multiple bloomings per year possible under optimal conditions).

Ideal conditions (inspired by its mountainous habitat)
Climate :

Temperature :
Day : 18–24°C (moderate temperatures).
Night : 12–15°C (cool nights are essential for blooming).
Minimum : 10°C (avoid frost).

Humidity : 60–75% (as in Brazilian cloud forests).
Use a humidifier or a pebble tray in dry interiors.

Light :

Bright but indirect light (50–70% shade).
Tolerates stronger light than many other Cattleya (avoid only direct midday sun).

Ideal : East or west window, or under horticultural LEDs (10,000–12,000 lux).

Watering :

Growth period (spring-summer) :
Watering every 2–3 days, keeping the substrate slightly moist.

Winter rest (autumn-winter) :
Reduce to 1–2 times per week.

Method : Short soaking (5–10 min) or watering from above with soft water (rainwater or demineralized water).
