Cylindrolobus marginatus – Technical Data SheetOrigin and Classification
- Scientific name: Cylindrolobus marginatus (Rolfe) S.C.Chen & J.J.Wood
- Origin: Southeast Asia (Southern China, Yunnan, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam), where it grows as an epiphyte in humid tropical forests [powo.science.kew.org].
- Natural habitat: Low-altitude rainforests, on tree trunks or branches.
- Classification: Orchidaceae family, Epidendroideae subfamily, Podochileae tribe.
- Synonyms: Eria marginata Rolfe, Pinalia marginata (Rolfe) Kuntze.
Appearance
- Size: Small to medium (10–20 cm in height).
- Pseudobulbs: Claviform (club-shaped), clustered, green or yellowish (5–10 cm long).
- Leaves: Lanceolate, leathery, dark green, narrow (5–10 cm long).
- Roots: Fine, adapted to mounted culture or small baskets.
Flowers
- Shape: Flowers in short and dense clusters, borne on erect or slightly pendant spikes.
- Color: Creamy white to pale yellow, with a white or slightly purple-spotted lip. Some varieties may feature pink or pale green shades.
- Fragrance: Light, floral.
- Flower size: 1–2 cm in diameter.
- Blooming period: Spring–summer (March–July).
- Bloom duration: 2–3 weeks per flower.
Cultivation
Temperature
- Day: 20–28°C.
- Night: 14–18°C (a day/night drop of 6–8°C promotes blooming).
- To avoid: Temperatures <10°C or >32°C [powo.science.kew.org].
Humidity
- Ideal rate: 70–80% year-round.
- Tip: Use a humidifier or a terrarium to maintain humidity in dry indoor environments.
Light
- Intensity: 15,000–25,000 lux (filtered and indirect light).
- Ideal source: East or north window, or artificial lighting (horticultural LEDs).
- To avoid: Direct sunlight during hot hours.
Watering
- Growth period (spring–summer): Regular watering (every 2–3 days), letting the substrate dry out slightly between waterings.
- Rest period (autumn–winter): Reduce to 1–2 times per week, without letting it dry out completely.
- Method: Misting or quick soaking with soft water.
Substrate
- Mounting: On a cork, tree fern, or bark plaque, with a layer of sphagnum moss.
- Basket: Highly draining mix – fine bark (60%), sphagnum moss (30%), charcoal (10%).
- Repotting: Every 1–2 years, in spring.
Fertilization
- Growth period: Balanced fertilizer (20-20-20), diluted to ¼ strength, every week.
- Rest period: Reduce to every 2–3 weeks in winter.
Tips for Successful Cultivation
- To maximize blooming: Maintain high humidity and a distinct day/night temperature drop. Cultivate in a terrarium or under a cloche if the air is dry.
- To preserve root health: Avoid standing water and ensure good ventilation. Do not allow the substrate to dry out completely.
- To boost vigor: Fertilize with a high-nitrogen fertilizer (spring–summer), then a high-phosphorus fertilizer (autumn). Protect from cold drafts in winter.
Additional Remarks
