Technical Data Sheet – Gongora irmgardiae × seideliana (In vitro culture, lot of 15 plants minimum)
1. Identification and Origin
- Genus: Gongora (Orchidaceae, subtribe Stanhopeinae).
- Origin: Hybrid derived from Gongora irmgardiae and Gongora seideliana, two species native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America (Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador).
- Natural habitat: Epiphytic orchids, growing on trunks or branches in shaded, humid, and well-ventilated areas.
2. Appearance
- Stems: Pendant, bearing spaced-out pseudobulbs.
- Leaves: Elongated, leathery, light to medium green in color.
- Flowers: In hanging clusters, often fragrant, with bright colors (yellow streaked with reddish-brown, inherited from G. seideliana).
- Blooming period: Mainly in autumn or winter, depending on cultivation conditions.
3. Cultivation Conditions (for 15 in vitro plants)
Temperature
- Day: 20–28°C.
- Night: 16–18°C minimum (never drop below 15°C).
- Day/night drop: A differential of 5–8°C is ideal to promote blooming.
Humidity
- Ideal rate: 60–80%. Maintain high ambient humidity, especially during the active growth phase.
Light
- Intensity: Filtered light, without direct sun (ideally near an east or west window, or under greenhouse shading).
- To avoid: Direct exposure to the sun, particularly in summer (risk of leaf burns).
Substrate
- Recommended: Pure sphagnum moss or a mix of fine bark (60%) and sphagnum moss (40%) to ensure good drainage and moisture retention.
- Repotting: To be done every 1 to 2 years, preferably in spring, in a well-draining pot or basket of an appropriate size (rather small).
Watering
- During growth: Regular watering every 2–3 days, letting the substrate dry slightly between waterings.
- During rest: Reduce the frequency, but prevent the substrate from drying out completely.
