- Scientific name: Maxillaria variabilis Bateman ex Lindl.
- Origin: Rainforests of Central America (Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua) and northwestern South America (Colombia, Ecuador).
- Natural habitat: Epiphytic, often found on tree branches and trunks in shaded and well-ventilated areas, between 500 and 1,800 m in altitude.
3. Cultivation Conditions (Lot of 15 in vitro plants)
Temperature
- Day: 20–26°C.
- Night: 14–16°C (significant day/night drop is important for blooming).
- To avoid: <12°C or >30°C.
Humidity
- Ideal rate: 70–85%.
- Tip: Maintain high and constant humidity, especially during the active growth phase. Use a misting system for the in vitro plantlets.
Light
- Intensity: Filtered to low light (north window or dense shading in a greenhouse).
- To avoid: Direct exposure to the sun.
Watering
- In vitro: Keep the medium slightly moist, avoid standing water.
- Post-deflasking / Post-transplanting: Regular watering, allow the substrate to dry out slightly between waterings.
Fertilizer
- In vitro: Diluted nutrient solution (1/4 dose) every 2 weeks.
