1. Identification and Origin

  • Scientific name: Maxillaria variabilis Bateman ex Lindl.
  • Origin: Rainforests of Central America (Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua) and northwestern South America (Colombia, Ecuador).
  • Natural habitat: Epiphytic, often found on tree branches and trunks in shaded and well-ventilated areas, between 500 and 1,800 m in altitude.

3. Cultivation Conditions (Lot of 15 in vitro plants)

Temperature

  • Day: 20–26°C.
  • Night: 14–16°C (significant day/night drop is important for blooming).
  • To avoid: <12°C or >30°C.

Humidity

  • Ideal rate: 70–85%.
  • Tip: Maintain high and constant humidity, especially during the active growth phase. Use a misting system for the in vitro plantlets.

Light

  • Intensity: Filtered to low light (north window or dense shading in a greenhouse).
  • To avoid: Direct exposure to the sun.

Watering

  • In vitro: Keep the medium slightly moist, avoid standing water.
  • Post-deflasking / Post-transplanting: Regular watering, allow the substrate to dry out slightly between waterings.

Fertilizer

  • In vitro: Diluted nutrient solution (1/4 dose) every 2 weeks.
  • Post-deflasking / Post-transplanting: Orchid fertilizer (1/2 dose) during active growth.

Ventilation

  • In vitro: Light air circulation to prevent mold.
  • Acclimation: Gradually increase ventilation after transplanting.

Repotting

  • Substrate: Fine bark + perlite + charcoal to ensure good drainage.
